New GD Star Rating, version 1.8.9 has just been released. This version fixes several bugs and also improves on some of the existing features. Also, readme.tx file is updated with more FAQ and info about use of gdsr-config.php file for additional low level settings.
Google Rich Snippet utility has now few more options to display snippet as visible and to add it to top or bottom of the post content. It seams that Google is not parsing snippet code when it’s set as hidden, even though their snippet testing tool is parsing it fine. xScape themes will soon get some sort of styling for visible snippet blocks to better blend them into the content.
I have fixed problems with adding unneeded JS and CSS on admin pages and few other minor problems.

This is the best plugin yet hardest I ever encountered. After almost a week using and tweaking I still don’t understand how to correctly customize this plugin to suit my needs. I have a blog about one product. My blog has various categories such as: reviews, news, etc. I want visitors who give comments also give ratings for the product in the review category, just like Amazon or similar review sites. But I don’t need visitor’s ratings for post in news and other categories. Can you show a simple tutorial how to do it, or is there an article here that discusses about this. I greatly appreciate your help. Thanks.

The tutorials on this site should be enough, but as you may know, support for this plugin is not free. Premium support on Dev4Press website includes premium forum and video tutorials. Support on this site is limited to bug reports.

You are able to set up rules that apply per category. Take a look at the “Categories” Tab under the settings section of the plugin. You can, for instance, set GDSR to show up only for posts in the Review category, and set the plugin to be “closed and hidden” for all other categories.
Here’s a tutorial:

And if you want to integrate the rating into comments, so people leave a comment and review at the same time, check here:

Hello,
Thanks for the plugin. I’m in the process of integrating it into my theme and I have a few questions I’m hoping you can answer quickly!
Firstly – I’m trying to apply voting rules based on categories. I have successfully applied rules for stars for articles according to category, but I cannot do seem to do this with thumbs in the comments. I can change the rule manually for each article, but despite my rules being set to “hidden”, comment thumbs appear anyway for each article when it’s set on “inherit from category”. Is this a known issue, and is there any way to fix it?
Secondly – is there a way to test if GD star rating applies within the loop? For example, I am using wp_gdsr_show_article_rating to show non-active rating summaries for each article on a listing page – but it appears even for articles that have the stars disabled. I currently have a rule based on category, but it would be preferable to test for the plugin.
Thanks!

I will check the first problem, maybe there is a bug in there. As for the second, that function will display rating regardless of the settings. Use the other one: wp_gdsr_render_article.

I have a question about Google Rich Snippet utility. I know that there is an option to have it auto embed inside of a post or page content area.
Is it possible to have it be embedded outside of the post or page content area?
Like after or before the post content area inside of the single.php or as a php script (ex. )
Thanks I love this plugin.

Yes, there is a function for this. Check info files. Also, next week GDSR 1.9 is coming and it will have more snippet options.

I have everything set correctly, and understand the plugin. But the Comments Widget will not show any rated comments. It’s just blank below the widget heading. My comments are thumbs up/down rated, and there are ratings. I have the widget settings all properly configured.

That widget is not working with thumbs ratings.

Man, that’s unfortunate. That’s 90% of the reason I started using it. How long until it is fixed?

It’s not, at least not in 1.x versions. I am not going to waste my already limited time to add feature that will require a lot of work with full on development of 2.0 on the way.
