GD Star Rating 1.7.5

Thumbnail for GD Star Rating 1.7.5

Last week I was very busy with other projects, so for this new release of GD Star Rating, you will get any fixed bugs. There were several bugs reported, and all now fixed. Few issues are still in works, so after I confirm the problems, they will be also fixed.

Few minor issues with Google Rich Snippets are fixed, and I added function for manual integration of the snippet code. I fixed some T2 rendering issues for multi results, broken validation by the loader blocks, problems with full uninstall tool and missing vote waiting message for the multi ratings.

That’s it for now. Next release will skip next week, and 1.7.6 will be released on November 23. If any critical bugs are found, I will release sooner if needed. I will try to post few tutorials in the mean time, and first on Google Rich Snippets is due in the next few days.

Plugin inserts a line with some numbers on tope of every single post page. Cannot change any of the plugin settings from the settings panel – when I click on ‘Save’, they just revert to previous state.

Line with numbers is from Google Rich Snippets features and it’s hidden. If you can see it, that you are using some older version of the plugin. As for the settings, that’s already covered: this happens because you use old version of PHP, pre 4.4.9.

Any chance of getting the pre PHP 4.4.9 bugs fixed any time soon? Or maybe there’s a workaround for it?
        It’s really annoying i can’t save any settings… :(

It’s not going to be fixed. I modified read me file and requirements to PHP 4.4.9, and even that will be gone soon, and PHP 5 will be required. PHP4 is old, and outdated and no longer supported, and it’s time to upgrade. PHP4 is very unsecure compared to PHP5, and not developed for the last two years almost.

            Milan,

I’ve had your plugin for awhile. Almost since the conception of my site. I’ve never had a problem with your automatic upgrades till now.

This last one kicked it out. And when I tried to reactivate it, I get this error:

Warning: require_once(/hermes/web08/b1138/moo.rscape1/thetvbuff.com/wp-content/plugins/gd-star-rating/code/defaults.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /hermes/web08/b1138/moo.rscape1/thetvbuff.com/wp-content/plugins/gd-star-rating/gd-star-rating.php on line 33

just wanted to double check that while a manual function for rich snippets has been added, rich snippets are automatically activated for posts which contain star ratings? I.E. I don’t need to do anything, and my ratings will start showing up in SERPs eventually? Thanks for the update! Great work!

Yes. Snippets are active by default, and auto inserted. You only need to select what type of ratings you want to be inserted (Settings->Special).

But in some cases it’s good idea to have a way for manually inserting them (very rare, but it can happen), so a function is added.

    hallo,
i’m using GD star rating on my site.

my problem is: when a user Submit on a multi rate the stars turn into blank stars.

if i refresh the page everything is ok and the vote counted.

is there any solution about this?

i have one problem with T2 templates.

i translate the “Default Element Word Votes” and everything is ok!

when i try to translate another template, i make my changes and when i click the “save template” button i receive this error message “Not Acceptable

An appropriate representation of the requested resource /wp-admin/admin.php could not be found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.”

Great work, what you’re doing is very impressive.

My issue is that the settings will not save. Whichever tick box is unticked by me or whichever setting is changed, once you click on ’save settings’ it says “Settings saved.” at the top but nothing takes effect.

Running PHP version 5.2.11 and MySQL version 5.0.81. Any thoughts? Seems to be happening to a few people recently.

Don’t worry, it was a server issue. Tip for everyone here!

I had to select from a dropdown list that when php files are executed, they are executed in PHP5 (and not PHP4). Even though it says PHP 5 is installed, it seems as though the lowest version is used. Running great now.

I am sorry, but I can’t help you with server related problems beyond the info I added in FAQ. I am not server admin, and I can’t help you solve server problems. If setting files rights is not helping, than something much more complex is a problem, and I have no idea what can the problem be. I am available for customizations and integration, nothing more.

      We can go from there.

You know what is required on the server to make your plugin work. Thats why I wanted to hire you. You could investigate what is not turned on or what is missing. from looking at the php settings listed in the GD tools plugin.

But I can do it since you can’t/won’t I need to see your server settings so I can make mine be like yours please.

I really don’t know much on server configuration. On my development local servers I use default PHP.INI, pre set with XAMPP installation, and you can take a look in the PHP.INI from there. On two different hosts I use now PHP.INI is preset, and I have no way of changing them, and on both BlueHost and JustHost i made NO CHANGES to any of the server settings. And you can’t just copy PHP.INI values like that, some things are server dependent. Plugin doesn’t require anything special to work. And again, I am not available for server related work because (again) aside from what I included in FAQ, plugin doesn’t require anything else.

Well. I am confused then. If your settings are default server settings and there is nothing special needed to operate your plugin then why presume that its a server issue. How else would you debug an issue?

I am at a loss. If it were your server what would you do to look in the code to see why things are not working as they should.

How about I give you access to my admin and you operate the plugin as you normally would and see what happens?

What do you have to loose if you are being paid?

I have gone through many hosting companies to know that some of them are running very limited versions of server software and that includes apache, mysql and php with some very, very restrictive settings that they will not allow you to change. Long before I made GD Star Rating I tried 3 hosting companies that couldn’t even run basic WordPress.

And online debugging is very slow, and maybe even impossible depending on the server. I don’t feel comfortable taking a job and taking your money when I am not sure that I can help you at all. But, if your hosting companies is not ready to help you with problem of setting server properly, I think that you should change hosting.

Thats the thing. I have a very good host. I will try this on my own server enviroment on a blog I no longer use. I have everything enabled but its not php5 it runs php4. I will see if its actually a server issue or its your plugin.

I can have anything enabled within a few seconds on my new host that offers php5. So configuration is not an issue. plus a great deal can be enabled through htaccess if we need.

Why not go in to my blog admin and at least see that I have done things right to make sure its not user error?

not sure if this is caused by this release, but in IE6 the stars do not display properly before a rating has been selected. I have 10 stars. I’ve done some fairly extensive testing and am pretty sure this is not a theme issue.

I took a default fresh theme, plugin is set to not show stars by default, only added this to single.php:

And it only shows 5 stars in IE until mouse-over or selection. Here is a screenshot:

    Hi MillaN

I’ve been investingating how to implement your plugin in the subheading plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/subheading/. It would make a great company to a game’s review site.

The stars are dipslayed at the post properly http://gry-rekreacyjne.pl/recenzje/zrecznosciowe/a-ball-recenzja/

but in the subheading they aren’t. I’v contacted the author of subheading plugin and I was told to put the follwing code:

    <?php if (function_exists('the_subheading')) { echo do_shortcode(the_subheading('’, ”, false)); } ?>

in the single.php and index.php, where do_shortcode should be some code that will make the stars appear in the subheading.

Could you point me to the code which I should paste there? I’ve reviewed gdstarrrating documentation and tried different things but I am unable to make it right.

    Thanks.

    Cheers,
    Tom

    Hi MillaN,

A few months ago a GDstar user asked you on a forum for a way to see the total rating (thumbs up/down) for each user (by the comments or articles they’ve posted) on the blog/website.

I’ve uploaded GDstar 3 weeks ago, but can’t find a way to see the score of each user, only the score for each article.

For I want to give users with a high rating, the ranking of ‘Author’ for they can post articles, but when theire articles get bad ratings, they will degrade back down to commentator…

For you’re information, I don’t have a MU WP, just WP, and I use the Puremagazine theme by Bizzartic.

    Hi Millan,

    congrats very good job!
I just installed your plugin on my website, but I noticed that the rating system (onmouseover) doenst work properly in Chrome (for me).
    The starts don’t change colour.
The main problem is in my DOCTYPE.
I had to change the DOCTYPE in this way

This in order to let the “add me” horizontal sliding div working properly in Chrome and Firefox.

If I change the DOCTYPE then GD STAR RATING works, but then my horizontal sliding div doesnt work anymore neither in Chrome neither in Firefox.

Do you have any solutions for this?
Any hack that I can use with the DOCTYPE and GD STAR RATING for Chrome?

Try reading FAQ, there are some things related to such mysterious behaviors, and usually are solved by reviewing and saving all plugin settings.

I really don’t know, I don’t know why that is happening. Most likely there is some very obscure setting in that PHP that’s causing problems. But, so far several users reported that problem with PHP4.4.8, and the only solution was upgrade to PHP5.
