GD Star Rating 1.6.8

Thumbnail for GD Star Rating 1.6.8

This will be most likely last 1.6.x release, and by the end of the week I will release 1.7.0. Support for cache plugins is almost completed, and this version expands it to post and comment thumb ratings, and now only multi ratings remain to be cached.

I made some more changes to cache support, fixed few minor problem with it and added cache thumbs rating support. Multi ratings with cache support will be in the next version. I have added more security related settings to control visibility of widgets and IP addresses depending on the user level. I also added few more rendering templates for thumbs and standard rating.

Number of bugs have been fixed, and some missing translation strings are now updated. All translations will be updated during the next week in time for the 1.7.0 release.

I have updated FAQ on the website and in the readme.txt. Check it before reporting bugs.

So, please test cache support and report any problems you might found and include what cache plugin you use so I can fix problems before 1.7.0 is released. Comments and suggestions are always welcome.

This website is updated to GD Star Rating 1.6.8, and uses WP Super Cache plugin. You can see how the new dynamic rating is working, and is not affected by cache.

Where I expected to see the star rating icon, I see it says — GD Star Rating loading…

Is this taking so long due to 900 blog entries or is there some setting I’m missing?

I already told you that your server settings are wrong and that CSS and JavaScript plugin needs are not loaded at all. Once you fix that, everything will work. Read the FAQ.

After working the last two days to get GD-Rating working, I was finally able to bring up the star icons by going to Settings/JS & CSS files. At this point do the following.

Activate Link external javascript… and Link additional CSS file… Those are squares 1 and 3. Leave the second option unchecked. Also, leave Auto cache of main CSS file enabled unchecked.

This is how I was able to bring up the Star icons. As yet I have not been able to make the ranking counter work so I don’t have everything operating properly. If and when I do, I will report my settings.

Hint: Be sure to refresh the browser so you see what effect the settings changes are making. In one case I needed to shut down the browser and reboot it to see the new results.

After 1.7.0 is released. But I don’t plan to add category based ratings, and there will be category functions that will use ratings from the posts in the category.

Thanks. Question is : if several people rate posts belonging to a single category, will it be possible to get the highest rated one(s) per category ?

I have a plugin running – WP Hide Dashboard, as i dont want my subscribed users to see much of the site save for their profile, this has worked fine, but recently i have noticed that a subscriber (level 0) still sees the GD Star Rating side panel in the dashboard, I would prefer if this was nto the case, so thought i could fix the problem by changing the access level to 10. However this has made no difference. is this a bug?

This should be solved with 1.6.8. I added security related options to set the user level that can see the dashboard widgets. You will find these on the Settings panel, security tab.

    Hi,

Love your plugin and excellent work! Quick question – When I just updated, the dashboard widget seems to have dissappeared and I don’t see any option to re-activate it. Any idea what’s happened?

    Thanks so much!

For security reasons I added new Security tab on the Settings panel, where you can set the user level that will be able to see dashboard widgets. Also, after every update, check and save all settings to ensure that they are all there. WP can sometimes loose them.

Thanks so much for your response! I read your FAQ and also checked the security tab. It’s set to 10 – I’m logged in as admin and I still don’t see the widget on the dashboard. I also checked the dashboard screen options and don’t see your widget as an option. Really not sure what I’m doing wrong at this point. Thanks so much for the great work!

After updating to 1.6.8 i got my star rating not working. Wherever my thumbs should be visible I get loading…..
In 1.6.7 (before update) all was fine. Now in 1.6.8 it doesn’t work :/

Thumbs now also support cache loading. You need to disable that and see if the thumbs come back. But, anyway this should be working regardless, and after loading, thumbs (as stars do) shoule appear. Disable cache on Settings panel, Features tab, first checkbox option.

I found that there is no database tables :/
I tried to put it manually via phpmyadmin, but there is something wrong with parsing %.. in sql files.

I must change my hosting I thing. On my second blog, on other hosting provider all is ok in the newest version.

Maybe You made some improvements and my PHP, MySQL is to old?

Plugin has a Setup panel and options to install everything if the auto install fails. And if that fails also, most likely you have very old and unsupported mySQL 3. Also, check readme.txt for a link to table layouts overview.

I would like to know if GD Star Widgets have any problem with the thematic theme.

Also Lowell Herr mention that in settings their is a JS/CSS tab. I don’t seem to have that tab.

I don’t test plugin with every theme, but widgets are 100% compliant with every WP widget rule and recommendation, so if there is a problem, problem is in theme. There is no JS/CSS tab, there are settings for this on Settings panel.

Is it normal, that I can’t rate (thumb) the post author comment?
How can I enable this option?

    I’m not an author :)

    Fantastic work!
Quick one: Is it possible to have a lets say 10 items multi set rating, without enforcing the user to rate ALL the items but only some of them and press a submit button ?

    Thanx in advance,

Thanks! As for the voting for only some of the multi rating elements, it is possible only for comment integration but I DON’T recommend it and I am not sure what can happen, and most of the results averages will be unreliable. As for standard multis within the post, that it’s not allowed because of the calculation problems.

I want to use your plugin for a review site, so users can rate a product within their comment.
I have already added the php line in comments.php to enable it, but now I have the rating stars in every commenting form.
Is it possible to restrict the ratings only to some pages and not to the whole page?
because I have other pages that only need a normal commenting form without ratings.

Yes, using category based settings. There are tutorials on this subject also.

okay thank you I will look into this.

Is there already any fix to the problem that you can rate with every comment you write? I’ve read your comment from July where you said that you don’t have a solution yet, so I am wondering if you already found something for this problem.

        thank you!

It solved awhile back. All integration options are on integration tab of the Settings. And this is activated by default.

The only tutorial I found on this is: http://www.gdstarrating.com/2009/06/24/categories-management/
In it you say that you will release a tutorial in 3 days about how to use the integreation column in the categories management, but I could not find anything on this.

Using the Multi Set in Categories I can only select which Multi Set to use for a category but I can’t disable the rating for a category. There is just no option for this.

And is there any way to put a page into a category in order this will work?

This article is all you need. But, right now this is somewhat limited. If you want to clear integration of multi set for a category, you need to set it to Inherit from category.

Next version will have this modified, and there will be additional option to make this more straightforward.

good to hear that there will be a straightforward way for this. I think your plugin is now already much better than all the “premium” review plugins.

I have set the category in which I don’t want the comment integration to “inherit from parent” but it still shows me the integrated comment ratings. I guess I must somehow tell the parent category that is should not integrate it but I cant find any option for this.
