Shortcodes

Thumbnail for Shortcodes

All shortcodes plugin supports are very complicated, and have a lot of settings. It’s not a good idea for anyone to actually remember all that or even need to go through list of all those settings. But as it turns out you don’t need to remember all that.

There are two ways to add shortcodes, in both cases getting shortcodes are created using simple wizards. In both cases you can add all supported shortcodes. Depending on what you set only some settings will be part of the shortcode, only settings that are different from defaults.

Edit Post/Page panel

Editor button

This is the easiest way to do this. But  this will work only with visual editor active. If you don’t use this editor, you need to use the second method. Visual editor toolbar has bunch of buttons, and one of the is for GD Star Rating. And this button has a star on it, as you can see on the image on the left. If you don’t see it, go to plugin Settings, Integration tab and enable it.

TinyMCE3 Widget

Once you click on this button, a TinyMCE3 editor widget will be displayed, and you will see a bunch of options to choose from. Shortcode selection list on the first tab allows you to choose the shortcode. Once you do that you will notice that tabs beside the Insert tab will changes allowing you to choose options for the shortcode you want. Once you set everything, click Insert, and the shortcode with settings you have chosen will be added into editor.

Builder Panel

In case you don’t use visual editor, you can still build the shortcode. And for that, there is a builder panel in the GD Star Rating menu. This panel allows building both shortcodes and functions you can add into theme files. As you can see on the image on left, this panel looks like the TinyMCE3 widget with slightly different interface.

Builder

This panel will display the same list of shortcode as the widget does. But you will get both function and shortcode as a result. So, you can simply copy the shortcode generated here and insert it into the post or page content.

Settings in both builder and post editor widget are exactly the same. Be sure to check all the settings for each shortcodes so that you don’t miss anything. And the most important thing is to try things, to try different settings before you are sure what can be done with some of the shortcodes.

As you can see, this is very simple to use, much simpler than with any other plugin. As far as I know, less than 1% of plugins for WordPress provide such easy way to work with shortcodes.

Because of both these features I will not going to publish exact list of settings for shortcodes or functions. This list is not needed, and I don’t plan to update it every time I make changes. Use one of these methods for shortcodes, simple as that.

I wish all plugins would provide a shortcode builder like this – it’s such a powerful feature. Thanks!

    Hi

I wonder if you could help. I am using this but am struggling to get it to display as I would like.

My ‘blog in progress’ is at http://www.uktraveloffers.com and the page I am trying to generate is a ‘top offers’ page, currently at http://www.uktraveloffers.com/top-offers/

For some reason, the graphics won’t display and I don’t want the ‘Review’ column to appear, only the ‘Rating’ and the appropriate image. Is there any way I can fix this?

    Thanks

    Paul

You need to modify templates for this. But, in a day or two I will publish a new tutorial about this, so you can see how it’s done
