And, it’s finally here. Thumbs up/down or recommendation ratings are now part of GD Star Rating. Thumbs can be used for both posts and comments, can use different sets much like the rating stars. This version also features few fixes and changes.
I fixed few reported bug, and made few changes to CSS optimizations, few improvements to caching and prefetch and also expanded cache for better support for thumbs up/down ratings. But, all that aside, the most important new feature is thumbs up/down rating, and example can be seen on this website in the corner of each post. I made few changes to some of the panels, and split settings panel to settings and graphics. Graphics panel now shows previews and is used to set stars and thumbs to be included in the main CSS file.
Set
Work on thumbs is far from completed, but even at this point, a lot of things are functional. Thumbs rating can be added to posts and comments. It supports different image sets and sizes, much like the star ratings do. The same way as for the stars, you can select thumb sets and sizes to include in CSS for active rating blocks. Each thumb image has two states, one for normal, and one for hover. Rendering is as usual done using T2 templates, and I included several additional templates. Right now there is only one thumbs set included in both PNG and GIF version. Unlike with the stars sets, thumbs sizes are a little different and two biggest sizes. Thumbs support 12px, 16px, 20px, 24px, 32px and 40px. I added function for theme integration of thumbs ratings, and also a shortcode for adding thumbs block into the post.
Some of the settings will be used from standard ratings, and that includes voting rules and restrictions. It will be confusing to have two sets of the different settings for each post or comment. Same goes for checking for duplicated votes and few other things. All thumbs specific options are on the thumbs up/down tab on the settings panel. Thumbs rating results are also displayed on the articles panel and in the log.
As for the number of SQL queries plugin adds for this new type of ratings depends on the settings, but it should be more than 6 in case where you have both comments and post thumbs on the same page, regardless how many comments or posts are there.
Still to do in the following versions: to add vote waiting indicator, comments integration, adding results to widgets and more functions. All that will be added in the next couple of version leading to 1.6.0 version.
As with any new feature, there will bugs in the thumbs up/down implementation. So, try it, and report if you found any problem. I have added a lot of debug calls, so if you find the problem, enable in-file debug and send me debug file afterward.
So, another new rating type is part of GD Star Rating, and this now makes this plugin ultimate rating system for WordPress that will allow you to set any kind of ratings you need. And as always, stay tuned for more.

Hi, I just upgraded the plugin, and it now shows both the thumbs rating, and the regular rating in both the post, and comments. How do I make it so it only displays the thumb rating for both the post and comments?

There are auto insert settings for all types of ratings. You can control where to insert what type of rating. Thumbs have own tab on Settings panel.

2. Also for thumbs there is no IP restriction/ browser restriction.. If i click n times it increase the total value n times??

This latest update seems to have broken my multi set post reviews. I set the review stars normally in the post but they don’t seem to be saving. Once I update/publish post and go back into edit mode the review stars are blank again.
I’ve turned off all the thumbs auto insertion code.
Any suggestions? Thanks

As I said, no issues on my side. And I always test plugin before releasing in all major browsers. Also, there is no connection between Starscape and plugin except for integration functions and even than there is nothing that can disable forms only in some browsers. Since Firefox is a piece of s**t browser, that causes many, many problems who knows what can the problem be. And the fact that the problem is only with Firefox tells a lot.

Nice work….
But i noticed a small bug. If the thumbs size is smaller than 32px (Medium), a small line is repeated in right and bottom part of the thumb.
i also overcome it by just making one px small the size of the thumb that it actually have.
But really nice work.
One more thing after giving vote to any thumb, i refresh the page then it thumb become active and now i also can vote again.

As I said you need to check everything. Some of the functions also have changed parameters, so most likely you need to check everything you use for integration. From 1.5.0 none of the functions will be modified, so future versions will don’t have this problem.

I went through all integration functions and updated parameters, but the problem was not there. I removed if clause
if (defined(“STARRATING_INSTALLED”)) :
and errors dissapeared from comment integration area, hovever there are still errors in displaing results at post pages, errors dissapear when I “lock and hidden” but I just want to “lock”, any clue?

Hi, great plugin!
I am, however, experiencing a weird problem in IE8. If I’m not using the “compatibility mode” it displays the stars twice if someone has voted. It’s kind of hard to explain, but check this link for an example http://www.machinemade.org/2008/09/fux-konkrete-jungle-oslo-bla-220808/
It works fine in all other (new) browsers I’ve tried. Is there something in my code or is it IE8′s fault?

Works fine on my end in both IE8 modes. Plugin works with all IE browsers (6.0 or newer), and IE8 compatibility mode is close to IE6/IE7, so there is no reason for it not to work.
