Thumbs Up/Down Intro

Thumbnail for Thumbs Up/Down Intro

As promised, I have began work on new type of ratings, called recommendations or thumbs up/down or like it/not like it. There are many names for it, but they all point to the same thing. But to make this even better I will need help from you.

Most of the things I need for this new ratings I already have. But still I am missing one important component. And that is the graphics that will be used. I have one or two images I can use to make a basic up and down buttons. But it would be great if we can have few more sets built in.

So, if you think that you can make good thumbs up/down set, here are some guidelines:

  1. I need from you two images, minimal size should be 64×64 pixels per image, preferably make them bigger.
  2. Images need to be fully transparent (alpha transparency). Don’t sent 8 bit images that are good only for GIF.
  3. Images must be your creation, we don’t want to have some copyright problem down the road.
  4. Thumbs are not really required, you can make some other sign as long as it’s obvious what the sign represents (for instance plus and minus signs).

And as with the stars sets, all proper copyright and contact info will be included with each set that is used. First version of this rating should be available in the next 2 weeks, so hurry up and send me the images. Send your creations to my email: milan at gdragon dot info.

    Hi,
    Good work so far.

Just a bit concerned with display of the rating stars in IE6. I am not sure if this bug is already tracked.

    Thanks,
    Rajesh

I am not aware of any problem with IE6. If you use only fully transparent PNG’s than ratings will have a gray background. That’s why for IE6 you can use GIF set that will be used only for this archaic browser. Plugin featured PNG Fix at one point, but it created more problems than it solved, so it’s removed.

Thumbs Up/Down (Nero-style rating) will be very useful.

Unfortunately, I am not an artist :(

Talking of smileys, it would be really cool if we could customize the image to the extent of having two big buttons, one containing a photo of a real person’s exaggeratedly happy face, the other containing the same person making an exaggeratedly unhappy face. I think that would appeal to people voting on a blog post or a restaurant listing etc.

As with the stars now, thumbs images will be fully customizable. This time it will be easier and any size of images can be used.

    Hi Millan,

Are U going to make the thumb Up/Down feature available for comment integration? I think that one of the most optimal constructions is when post i rated by star rating and comments are rated by simpler thumb up/down tool.

When it comes to icons, I’m not an artist too, but http://www.smashingmagazine.com sometimes helps me out, and there is no copyright problem, all graphics which are free are free there.

It will be available for comment integration, but not right away. I need to make a lot of things before that. Full thumbs up/down range of features will be completed in next few version leading to 1.6.

Hello! I am trying your plugin in a FeedWordpress syndicated blog, and I have one little question about the widget (related to the thumbs system, of course): is it possible to show the thumbs up/down in the widget? I can only see options for the star system.

Another question: is it possible to make pages with “the most rated posts”, just like the widget?

    Thanks a lot!

Next version will add thumbs support to widget and results rendering for posts/pages. There are shortcodes and functions for this.

Is there a way to display the results of the voting in a digg like style?
Essentially sort entry by highest number of positive votes.

Display where? Right now sorting in the widget and results can be done by rating from both positive and negative votes.
