In the last few weeks I was getting some questions about reviews and ratings, and I realized that some people don’t understand the difference. So, in this post I will try to explain the difference between the two. Also, both ratings and reviews support standard, comment and multi ratings systems.
Rating in general is a block placed in comment, post or page that allows voting to users and visitors. Rating can be limited to registered and logged in users or visitors and it can be time restricted. Post can have standard single rating block and/or multi ratings blocks. Comments support standard single rating block.
Review or review rating doesn’t allow receiving votes, and is only intendent to be set by the post author or comment author. Posts support both single element ratings or multi ratings. If you have more then one multi set defined, each one of them can be used for review of the post. Post author can set his review rating for post via post edit page. Comments support review with single rating block only. To use it with comments you need to integrate comment review block in comment form. Reviews can be changed only by the authors (or editor who can access the post), and you can display them using shortcode or custom functions.
The only variation of rating/review that’s still in works, and will be available in 1.3 branch is actual rating that allows voting but only to users or visitors adding comments. When a user adds a comment, comment form can have standard or multi rating block that will allow them to rate the post. Values added this way will be added to post rating.

Do you have an idea as to when 1.3 will be available? I am looking forward to this:

1.3.0 will be mostly the same as 1.2.3, with few additional fixes. It will be released in the next 4-5 days. And when that is out, I will expand on rating with comments.
