Beta 1.1.0 Revision 397

Thumbnail for Beta 1.1.0 Revision 397

Here is something I haven’t done in a while, a beta version of the plugin. New features are just for testing for now, and if everything goes as planned, official 1.1.0 release will be available on tuesday. This beta version introduces few a brand new features that will come in handy to improve your RSS feeds. I have RSS integration in my plans for this plugin for a while now, but the problem was I couldn’t use rendering used on the website, because DIV elements can’t be handled by many RSS programs.

RSS Feed Example

To solve this problem (as you can see on the picture, taken from IE7 feed reader), I created new rendering that will create static image with rating. This is now able to create fully transparent png’s or transparent gif’s from any stars set you have installed with the plugin, and this generated image will be used to integrate rating into feed.

Another new feature that was need for this to work fast, was cache. Plugin can now cache all the rating images generated this way, so all the people reading your feed will get rating stars from cache without need to generate them for each call. You can use integration without cache, but this could slow down your website because PHP GD library can use a lot of resources.  You can customize RSS integration pretty much like you can customize rating block for your website. Once you enable it (integration tab on settings panel), RSS tab will appear where you can set what to insert into feed. You don’t even need to use stars, you can insert only rating text. And rating text uses template so it can be customized also.

To enable cache, use new Cache tab on settings panel. Plugin needs a folder for this, and will attempt to create it, but if it fails, you will get a message telling you what to do to enable it. To enable RSS integration check Integration tab on Settings panel.

There is more to be done for this, because now all feed posts get the rating, and I would like to add more control to that. Also, I have added one more thing. You can now add powered by button at the end of feed post. You can turn it on if you want, and promote this plugin that way.

So, I hope you like new features, and as always comments and suggestions are welcomed. You can download this beta version from plugin download page.

Wow, I downloaded the beta and, so far, I’ve only had a chance to look at the readme.txt and, really, wow, what an impressive set of features.

You are doing some extraordinary work here.

Great plugin, I have a question though. Is their an option to add multiple votes per post. For instance I want the blog visitor to be able to vote on…

    Option 1
    Option 2
    Option 3

    … and so on.

So the user could vote on all three options and it would calculate the average of the three.

    Thank You,
    Daniel

    Hi,

I have made a blog about my dating life and have installed your rating system in. I have looked everywhere but can’t find a solution to my problem.

Basically when anyone submits a vote, it freezes on the loading animation and doesn’t submit anything at all. Im using WordPress 2.7. Help?

There is a problem with javascript on your site. Error is ‘Access to restricted URI denied’. This happens when url to website and url where the request is going is not the same. Your site is at http://www.smackthatass.co.uk, but plugin tries to send vote to: http://smackthatass.co.uk. Plugin gets the url from WordPress installation, so there must be something wrong with that.

ah i see. can i change the path on any config file for the plugin? so that instead of going to smackthatass.co.uk, it goes to http://www.smackthatass.co.uk instead?

This can’t be done. It could lead to misuse. This will depend on wordpress settings.
